Porous hair care tips and treatments.

Neglecting porous hair can lead to frizz, breakage, and a lacklustre appearance. However, with the right care and attention, it's possible to restore porous hair to its former glory.

This post explores effective techniques and products to nourish, strengthen, and protect porous hair, ensuring that you can enjoy beautiful, manageable locks once again.

Curls that are lovely and nicely groomed for every hair.

Isn't this what all women hope for? But alas, we find that our likeness to hair decreases gradually each day. Poor ecology, unbalanced nutrition, constant stress, dyeing, and curling make curls more and more porous.

Is it possible to correct the condition of your hair, restoring its shine and strength? Of course, you can. Let's talk about caring for porous hair.

Kinds of hair

By now, you've probably realized that there are many different hair kinds, including curly, thin, and dry hair.

Hair Structure

Knowing a little bit about the structure of the hair will help with understanding hair porosity. Your hair strands are composed of three layers:

The innermost layer, the medulla

The middle layer, the cortex

The outermost layer, the cuticle

What does porous hair mean?

Not all women face the problem of hair porosity. As a rule, owners of curly hair suffer from this structure.

Let's try to imagine porous hair. Under a microscope, each hair looks like a glass tube with a rod filled with melanin inside. On the outside of the hair, there are small scales covering one another, which create the smooth surface of the hair.

With the increased porosity of the curls, these scales are much more open and do not fit tightly together.

Understand Porous/porosity

If It floats on top, you have low-porosity hair that repels moisture. If you're looking for an even easier way to tell, simply spritz some water onto your hair when it's dry and note how fast it absorbs it.

If it soaks the water up right away, it's indicative of having highly porous hair. Your hair probably has low porosity if the water remains on top of your strands for an extended period of time.

WHAT IS POROSITY

How well hair can absorb and retain moisture is determined by its porosity, which is how porous it is.

The capacity of your hair to retain moisture is referred to as "hair porosity."Keratin treatments can help strengthen your hair and reduce some curls and frizz, and they're a simple way to make sure that your tresses remain nourished and healthy.

The capacity of the hair to absorb and hold moisture is measured by its porosity. It can also be thought of as a gauge for how readily moisture can enter the hair.

The majority of hair porosity is genetically determined, although it can also be changed by environmental variables including heat and chemical processing.

What is porosity according to specialists?

Describe porosity According to trichologist and celebrity hairstylist Kari Williams, PhD. "porosity is the hair's ability to absorb moisture and keep moisture in the strands."

According to another expert "Marisa Garshick, M.D." a board-certified dermatologist at Cornell-New York "Hair porosity refers to how well the hair is able to absorb or hold on to moisture."

Causes of porous hair

Unfortunately, nature often gives hair a porous structure. However, sometimes curls become porous due to improper care.

a. Frequent heat treatments, styling with hair dryers, straightening irons and curling irons leading to drying out and splitting of the hair.

b. Damage to curls is also caused by prolonged exposure to the sun with your head uncovered, frequent bathing procedures (especially visiting a dry sauna) and trips to the pool.

c. And, of course, increased porosity of curls is often caused by incorrectly done hair colouring, which causes the strands to dry out.

d. Porous hair almost always looks tousled and sloppy because it does not have a smooth surface and requires especially careful care.

Porous Hair Telltale Signs

Healthy hair has a smooth appearance, rich shine and vibrant colour. Porous curls are dull, lifeless strands, very hard and brittle to the touch.

Such hair is distinguished by open pores through which any components are absorbed, for example, street dust, pollen, and cosmetics.

Changes occur in the composition of curls, so-

called porosity appears.

Porous hair is very difficult to style even when

using powerful styling products.

It's difficult to manage curls:

They curl from the slightest changes in

humidity and don't hold their shape in the wind.

When dyeing porous hair, it is difficult to

achieve a uniform tone, since open scales

cannot colour the hair equally intensely. Even the

highest quality dye is washed off from the curls

after a maximum of 1-2 weeks.

What traits distinguish high porosity hair?

Your hair could be high porosity if it:

  • Seldom appears shiny
  • Feels and appears dry
  • Rapidly absorbs products
  • Easily tangles
  • Is liable to break
  • Often has frizzy hair
  • Air dries quite fast.

Brief Tips

  • Check out the ingredient lists.
  • Do not use shampoo too frequently.
  • The appropriate shampoo suds up.
  • Never go without the conditioner.
  • Get regular hair trimming.
  • Avoid tight styles.
  • Make use of a detangler.

Advice on how to take care of porous hair.

Trichologists and experienced hairdressers are convinced that even porous curls can be made smooth and manageable if they are properly cared for.

Remember a few simple recommendations for caring for porous hair, following which you can transform the appearance of even the most hopeless strands.
Wash your hair properly.
Rinse your hair with gentle massaging movements, avoiding injury to the scalp.
It is also important to rinse your hair thoroughly with warm or cool water.
Choose a suitable shampoo for porous hair, without aggressive substances.
For such weak curls, only a mild product is suitable.
Don't be lazy to make nourishing hair masks.
By filling your curls with vitamins and microelements, you will make them more beautiful and healthier.
Comb your curls correctly. Remember: do not touch wet hair with a comb. You can only comb dry curls.
Try to avoid heat treatment of your curls. Irons, hair dryers, curling irons and other styling devices lead to excessive dryness and porosity of hair. Stop using these devices at least when treating curls or at least use high-quality heat-protective cosmetics.
Protect your hair from environmental influences. Dry, porous hair requires especially careful attention, therefore, it is recommended to wear a hat in hot weather, and a hat in cold weather.
In summer, be sure to use cosmetics with SPF protection, and in winter, use special nourishing masks.
If possible, avoid using hair dyes.
The best solution when treating porous curls is a short haircut.
Once you have naturally colored hair left, you can begin to treat it. If such radical measures are not suitable for you, try to abandon aggressive paints with oxidizing agents, replacing them with coloring balms.
Don't pull your hair.
Remember, porous curls are not the best option for tight braids and ponytails.
Metal hairpins are also not suitable for such strands.
Melt the edges of the hairs regularly.
Haircuts with hot scissors will be very useful for porous hair.
For porous hair, use masks
For porous hair, masks with a high content of oils and vitamins are best. Strands in this condition need proper care and enrichment with useful substances more than ever.
On average, apply the mask for 15-30 minutes. During this relatively short time, the composition manages to penetrate under the scales and saturate them with the necessary nutrients.

Here are some of the most well-liked mask recipes for porosity hair.

  • Using a gelatin mask
  • The avocado mask
  • Seaweed mask
  • Mask made of oil
  • Mask with shampoo
Using a gelatin mask
  • To prepare this miracle remedy we will need:
  • 1 pct   -     A packet of gelatin
  • 1          -    One raw egg
  • 1 tbsp  -    Burdock oil

Before applying the mask, the hair should be washed and rinsed with warm water. The heat will help the scales open so that the composition gets inside the hairs. The mask should be left on the curls for 30-35 minutes.

The avocado mask
To prepare a potion for porosity we will need:

  • 2 tbsp   -   Spoons of avocado oil
  • 1 pct     -   Pack of gelatin
  • 1 tbsp   -   Spoon of warm water
  • 1 tbsp   -   Dry mustard
The product is mixed and applied to the curls for half an hour. After application, be sure to put on a plastic cap and wrap your hair with a towel on top. The composition perfectly moisturizes the strands, makes hair less porous and stimulates its growth.

Seaweed mask

A composition with seaweed will help you create a smooth, shiny hairstyle. To prepare it you need to prepare:

  • 1 tbsp   -  A spoonful of burdock oil
  • 2 tbsp   -  Spoons of jojoba oil
  • 1 tb       -  Tablet of seaweed
  • 1 pct     -   Pack of gelatin

All ingredients must be combined and mixed thoroughly. The mask is applied to pre-washed hair and left for 45 minutes.

Mask made of oil

  • One of the most effective compositions against excessive hair porosity will be an oil mask. To prepare it you will need:
  • yolks
  • 3-4   -  Drops of burdock oil
  • 0.1, l - Kefir
  • Tablespoon Melted honey(optional)

The mask is applied to the curls along the entire length and lasts for 45-60 minutes, after which it must be washed off with shampoo.

Mask with shampoo
A simple mask will make your curls manageable and shiny. To create it we will need:

  • 20 g  -  Unrefined vegetable oil
  • 20 g  -  Castor oil
  • 10g   -  Your favourite shampoo
The three ingredients should be combined and mixed thoroughly, and then apply the mixture with a cotton swab to the strands and hold it on the hair for 5-10 minutes, then rinse your hair without using additional care products.

Herbal rinses are also an excellent home care product for porous hair. It is enough to use them after washing your hair for a couple of weeks to notice the healing effect. You can make rinses from a variety of herbs - chamomile, burdock, plantain, hops and sage.

How should porous hair be styled?
As we said, a new short haircut will help give dry hair some much-needed vitality.

For porous hair, cascading haircuts will be very useful: they will remove the excess density of curls due to fluffy scales and will help you style your hair much faster.

If you don't want to cut your long locks, try making braids or twisting your hair during the treatment. The main thing is not to squeeze the curls too hard, as this will cause weak and brittle hair even more damage.
Super Tips
Use lukewarm or chilly water to wash and rinse high-porosity hair. For a smoother feel, this stimulates the cuticle to seal and retain more water.
Be patient Your strands will soon be strong, healthy, and simple to style if you have patience and stick to your new regimen.
